Media practitioners in the country have been advised to save the ship of the journalism from sinking by shunning graft and checking activities of quacks.
The Chairman , Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Ajibola Basiru, stated this in a paper he presented in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital on Saturday, titled, ‘Governance: How watchful are the watchdogs in ensuring accountability and transparency?’
The Senate spokesperson represented the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, at the event organised by journalists covering the activities of the Senate.
He lamented series of unprofessional conducts of some journalists, which “are sinking the ship of the profession.”
He, however, said “the ship of journalism in Nigeria needs to be re- navigated properly along the routes of professionalism and objectivity to prevent it from capsizing.”

He noted with concern that unprofessional conducts like cash-and-carry journalism and preference for sensationalism, among others, were reasons behind the ‘sinking ship of journalism’ in the country.
“It is therefore imperative for the press to rededicate itself to proper investigative journalism with necessary thoroughness that focus on substance of findings in relation to inefficiency, waste, corruption, mismanagement and/ or misappropriation being exposed,” Basiru stated.
