Former England defender Micah Richards has changed his prediction for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, naming France as his new favourites to lift the trophy.
Richards made the remark after France ended their group-stage campaign with a commanding 4-1 victory over Norway, a result that reinforced his confidence in Didier Deschamps’ side.
The 2018 world champions, who finished runners-up to Argentina in the 2022 final, will face Sweden in the Round of 32 on June 30 in New York, with a potential last-16 clash against Germany awaiting the winners.
Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Richards admitted he had initially tipped Spain to win the tournament but has now changed his mind.
“I said Spain would win the World Cup, but I’m telling you now, France,” he said.
“I’ve seen teams play well, I’ve seen teams be organised in the low block. Argentina are playing for Messi, Morocco look strong, England looked really good against Croatia, but a team that can turn it on – I’ve not seen a team like France.
“So I think they are now my favourites.”
Richards’ latest prediction comes as France continue to impress with their performances and remain among the leading contenders for the 2026 World Cup title.
