Fast-rising Nollywood actor, Ehiz Raphael, has opened up on his journey into the film industry, revealing how he made the bold decision to abandon a career in civil engineering to pursue his passion for acting.
In an interview with Sunday Sun, the talented actor, who has been gaining attention for his standout performance in Ghetto Dad, said his love for acting dates back to childhood, despite initial resistance from his family.
“Personally, I have always admired the craft since I was seven years old. I remember how I used to trouble my mom that I’d like to be an actor, but my dad wouldn’t let me. By profession, I am a certified civil engineer, but after certification, I chose my purpose — acting,” he said.
Speaking on what drew him to his recent role as a ghetto boy, Ehiz explained that he was fascinated by the mindset and lifestyle of people in such environments.
“What attracted me to the role is the thought process of these individuals—how they think, act, and perceive life,” he noted.
To deliver an authentic performance, the actor revealed that he immersed himself in real-life experiences, spending time in slum areas to observe and interact with people.
“I had to go to the slums, watch them, vibe with them, even drink with them, just to understand their reality and pick a thing or two,” he added.
He admitted that mastering street slang and accents was initially a challenge but said he has since improved over time.
Ehiz also highlighted how the role pushed him beyond his comfort zone, as he was previously known for playing more conventional roles.
“I was used to playing the regular fine boy or married man roles, but this gritty role made me realise I can be more than I think. It was a good push,” he said.
Beyond acting, the entertainer also works as an entertainment manager, organising events and providing entertainment services for lounges, clubs, and social gatherings.
On his career growth, Ehiz described every moment on set as a learning experience, noting that working with different actors continues to shape his journey.
Looking ahead, he expressed interest in taking on more diverse roles, including playing a grandfather, while maintaining that he would turn down any role that conflicts with his personal beliefs.
He cited global stars like Kevin Hart, Will Smith, Robert Downey Jr., and Russell Hornsby, alongside filmmaker Kunle Afolayan, as key inspirations influencing his craft.
Reflecting on his breakthrough moment, the actor pointed to 2024 as a defining year in his career.
“That was the year I did a job I didn’t even know would be seen,” he said.
Ehiz Raphael continues to establish himself as one of Nollywood’s promising talents, steadily winning over audiences with his versatility and dedication to the craft.
