Former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.), has called on Nigerians to actively support security agencies in the fight against terrorism and other criminal activities, stressing that restoring peace and stability requires a collective national effort.
In a statement issued to mark his 84th birthday, Abdulsalami expressed deep concern over the worsening security situation across the country, saying the recent death of Major General Abubakar Rabe (retd.) and many other victims of insecurity highlights the urgent need for united action against criminal elements.
Reflecting on his years of service in the Nigerian Armed Forces, including participation in the Nigerian Civil War and international peacekeeping missions, the former military leader said he understands the sacrifices required to safeguard the nation.
While acknowledging that many countries face economic and security challenges, he emphasized that Nigeria must remain committed to strengthening law and order and supporting ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and violent crimes.
According to him, the nation’s security agencies have shown determination in confronting security threats, but defeating terrorism cannot be left to security personnel alone.
“The armed forces and other security agencies have been resolute in the fight against terrorism, but this is not their battle alone. Every Nigerian has a stake in securing the country, and citizens must join hands with government and security agencies at all levels to defeat those threatening our peace and unity,” he said.
Abdulsalami blamed the politicisation of security issues for aggravating the crisis, warning that selfish interests and divisive narratives have weakened national efforts to tackle insecurity.
He also expressed concern over the growing spread of misinformation and fake news on social media, noting that false narratives and propaganda have inadvertently provided encouragement and visibility to terrorist groups and other criminal elements.
According to him, the success of one criminal group often emboldens others, making it imperative for Nigerians to reject misinformation and support credible efforts aimed at restoring peace.
The former Head of State urged citizens to put aside ethnic, religious and political differences and unite against insecurity, stressing that criminals do not discriminate based on identity.
He further encouraged members of the armed forces and other security agencies to remain steadfast in carrying out their responsibilities despite the challenges confronting them.
Abdulsalami also called on government authorities to sustain decisive actions against insecurity and prevent further loss of lives across the country.
Reaffirming his belief in Nigeria’s unity and future, he said he remains hopeful of a peaceful, stable and prosperous nation that future generations can inherit.
He appealed to Nigerians to remain law-abiding, vigilant and supportive of efforts to secure the country, while offering prayers for security personnel and other citizens who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
