Veteran Nigerian comic actor, Abiodun Ayoyinka, has announced a major shift in his career, stepping away from his iconic “Papa Ajasco” character amid an ongoing trademark dispute.
Ayoyinka revealed in a video shared on Instagram that he has adopted a new stage name, “Bondu Alaska,” citing challenges tied to the commercial rights of the “Papa Ajasco” brand, which is owned by filmmaker Wale Adenuga through his production company.
The actor explained that restrictions on the use of the character have limited his ability to monetise the widely recognised role, a situation he says has contributed to financial struggles in recent years.
Reacting to the development, Adenuga clarified that while Ayoyinka cannot independently use the “Papa Ajasco” brand for private business ventures, he remains eligible to feature in commercials with the company’s approval.
He dismissed Ayoyinka’s earlier claims as exaggerated, describing them as a “public display of comedy” and a misrepresentation of the facts. Despite the disagreement, Adenuga maintained that his relationship with the actor remains cordial.
Ayoyinka rose to fame through his role in the popular television series Papa Ajasco & Company, which originated from Adenuga’s 1984 film.
