Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has urged the police to accelerate investigations into the death of a 24-year-old youth, Patrick Peresuodei, whose killing has sparked public outrage across the state.
Peresuodei, an indigene of Amassoma community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, was reportedly involved in an online disagreement with one Mr. Bodmas Kemepadei. The dispute allegedly escalated into a physical assault, which later resulted in his death.
Speaking at the Government House, Governor Diri said the state government intervened immediately the incident was brought to its attention, stressing that murder is an offence against the state and would be treated as such.
He disclosed that after receiving briefings from relevant officials, he directed the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice to take over the case on behalf of the state to ensure that justice is served.
While condemning the killing, the governor appealed to the people of Amassoma community and youths across Bayelsa State to cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information that would aid investigations and bring justice to the victim’s family.
Governor Diri also expressed sympathy with the families of victims of a fatal road accident that occurred last Friday while they were travelling to attend the burial of the late Bayelsa Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo. He assured them of the state government’s support, describing the deceased as patriotic Bayelsans who would be remembered for their service to the state.
The governor further commended the Ewhrudjakpo family and the Ofoni community for their cooperation and peaceful conduct throughout the burial ceremonies.
In his words, “The death of Patrick Peresuodei is a serious matter, and I have directed the Commissioner for Justice to take over the case. It is a murder case, and we want a thorough and speedy investigation so that everyone involved will face the full weight of the law.
“Unfortunately, we also recorded another tragic incident involving those who were travelling for the deputy governor’s burial, where we lost two sons of Bayelsa State and several others sustained injuries. I extend my heartfelt condolences to their families.”
Meanwhile, a delegation from the Ewhrudjakpo family and the Ofoni community, led by Dr. Oyowvin Osusu, visited Governor Diri to appreciate the state government for its support and role during the burial of their son.
