The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has indicated that the 2027 general election is likely to be his final bid for Nigeria’s presidency.
Speaking in an interview with media personality Rufai Oseni, the former Anambra State governor said his decision is influenced by Nigeria’s informal zoning arrangement, which rotates the presidency between the North and the South.
Obi explained that if he does not emerge president in 2027, the presidency is expected to return to the North in 2031, making another presidential ambition unlikely for him.
According to him, by the time power rotates back to the South after 2031, he would be about 78 years old, an age he believes would not be suitable for another presidential campaign.
He, however, noted that he could only consider contesting again if the presidency remains in the South in 2031, but admitted that such a possibility is highly unlikely.
“I don’t know until after the 2027 election,” Obi said, leaving open a slim chance of another presidential bid.
