Troops Eliminate Top Bandit Kingpins, Destroy Hideouts in Sokoto Offensive

Troops of Operation Fansan Yamma have recorded a major breakthrough in the fight against banditry, killing several armed criminals, including notorious kingpins, and dismantling their strongholds in a coordinated operation along the Sokoto–Zamfara border.

The offensive targeted bandit camps located around Dangulbi and Kurawa villages in Tureta Local Government Area of Sokoto State, a strategic high-ground area that has long served as a haven for criminal elements operating across both states.

A security source familiar with the operation disclosed that troops engaged the bandits in a fierce gun battle after storming their fortified hideouts.

According to the source, several bandits were neutralised during the operation, including key commanders believed to be responsible for coordinating attacks on communities within the border region.

Many other suspects reportedly escaped with gunshot wounds and fled into forests stretching into neighbouring states.

The operation was carried out by personnel of the Nigerian Army’s 8 Division in collaboration with other security agencies and local vigilante groups who provided operational support and intelligence on the terrain.

Security forces also recovered a cache of weapons and motorcycles allegedly used by the bandits for attacks and movement across vulnerable communities.

The source commended the professionalism, bravery and swift response of the troops, noting that their actions prevented potential attacks on residents of Tureta and surrounding areas.

“The troops engaged the bandits in a fierce battle, forcing them to retreat into forests in neighbouring states. Clearance and mop-up operations are continuing to prevent their return,” the source said.

The successful operation has attracted praise from stakeholders, including the Special Adviser to Governor Ahmad Aliyu on Security Matters, retired Colonel Ahmad Usman, who described the military’s achievements as a significant step in the ongoing efforts to combat insecurity in the state.

Community leaders and residents also commended the Nigerian Army for sustaining pressure on criminal groups and expressed optimism that continued operations would help restore lasting peace and stability across affected communities in Sokoto and neighbouring areas.
