FCT Police Debunk Alleged School Kidnap, Say Incident Was False Alarm

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has dismissed reports of an alleged kidnapping at Phase 1 Primary School, Gbagalape, Abuja, describing the incident as a false alarm after extensive investigations and security operations found no evidence of abduction.

In a statement issued on Thursday night, the Command said officers from the Nyanya Division responded to a distress call at about 10:30 a.m. on June 4, 2026, reporting an ongoing kidnapping at the school.

The Divisional Police Officer immediately deployed personnel and surveillance teams to the area to assess the situation and ensure the safety of pupils, staff and residents.

According to preliminary findings, panic broke out when some pupils suddenly began shouting “kidnappers” and ran out of the school premises. The commotion quickly triggered fear among teachers and members of the surrounding community, prompting an emergency response by security agencies.

Police officers subsequently secured the school and conducted a comprehensive search of the premises and surrounding areas.

The Command said extensive searches and interviews with staff, pupils and residents failed to establish any evidence of a kidnapping. No suspect was identified and no victim was reported during the operation.

As part of precautionary measures, security personnel also carried out patrols and searches in nearby hills, boundary areas and adjoining communities. Neighbouring schools were equally visited to reassure residents and strengthen security presence in the area.

The police urged members of the public to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information capable of creating fear and unnecessary panic.

The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, encouraged residents to promptly report suspicious activities and emergencies to the nearest police station for swift response.

Meanwhile, the incident sparked anxiety in neighbouring communities in Nasarawa State, leading several private schools to temporarily suspend academic activities and send pupils home as a precautionary measure.

School administrators said the decision was aimed at reassuring parents and safeguarding students amid heightened concerns over security.

One of the affected schools, Innovative Heritage Academy, advised parents through a circular issued on its Parents-Teachers Association platform to keep their children at home until Monday due to prevailing tension in the area.

The school also urged parents to remain vigilant and continue praying for peace and security across the country.
