Peru Clinic fined $190,000 for leaking singer Shakira’s private medical records

The Peruvian clinic that treated Colombian mega-star Shakira for an abdominal condition in February has been fined $190,000 over the leaking of her medical record.

The 48-year-old four-time Grammy-winning Colombian singer-songwriter was rushed to hospital with an unspecified abdominal ailment back in February.

Two days later, she was back on stage in the Peruvian capital.

Shortly after her brief hospitalization, her medical report appeared on social media, sparking widespread outrage among fans and an official investigation.

The Delgado Auna clinic, where she was treated, said at the time it was investigating what it called a “serious ethical breach of our code of conduct and regulations governing personal data processing.”

Susalud, which oversees Peru’s health-care industry, said Wednesday it imposed a fine of 668,750 soles ($188,355) on the Auna-controlled Delgado Clinic. Located in Lima, the private hospital is popular with the country’s elites and its main location is in the wealthy neighborhood of Miraflores, where it boasts a helicopter landing pad.

Susalud said the disclosure of the singer’s data was a “serious violation” and that all patients are entitled to “dignity and intimacy,” as well as a guarantee that their personal information will be treated confidentially.
