DIAN Unveils Roadmap to Boost Local Arms Production, Cut Dependence on Imports

The Defence Industries Association of Nigeria (DIAN) has unveiled a new strategic roadmap aimed at reducing Nigeria’s dependence on imported military equipment through the expansion of local production of arms, ammunition and other defence hardware.

The initiative was announced during the association’s General Meeting held in Abuja, where stakeholders outlined plans to strengthen indigenous defence manufacturing and improve national security capabilities.

In a communiqué issued after the meeting and signed by the association’s General Secretary, Kola Balogun, DIAN said the strategy is focused on achieving self-reliance in defence production through innovation, industrial partnerships and increased local capacity.

According to the association, the effective implementation of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria Act 2023 remains key to the success of the initiative.

Balogun explained that the law provides a framework for local manufacturing, technology transfer, reduced import dependence, foreign exchange savings and job creation within the defence sector.

DIAN also revealed that more than 18 new members had joined the association, describing the development as a sign of growing investor confidence in Nigeria’s defence industrial sector.

The association stated that it is developing a coordinated strategy to improve collaboration among stakeholders and advise the government on policies aimed at reducing reliance on foreign military hardware.

According to DIAN, the initiative is expected to strengthen supply chains, attract investment and support efforts to tackle insecurity across the country.

However, the association identified poor coordination within the defence industrial ecosystem as a major challenge and called for stronger institutional collaboration and effective policy implementation.

As part of ongoing reforms, DIAN announced the dissolution of its pioneer executives and trustees, with fresh elections scheduled for July 2026.

The association also adopted its constitution to guide operations and promote transparency and accountability.

DIAN further encouraged members to participate in the African International Defence Exhibition (AFRIDEX), scheduled to hold in Lagos in October 2026.

According to the association, the exhibition will serve as a platform to showcase Nigeria’s growing defence manufacturing capabilities to both local and international stakeholders.

Reaffirming its commitment to building a resilient and globally competitive military industrial complex, DIAN said the new direction would encourage local procurement, create employment opportunities and strengthen Nigeria’s defence capabilities.
