The Executive Chairman of Nsukka Local Government Area, Engr. Jude Asogwa, has expressed profound appreciation to the Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, for the flag-off of the 5,000-shop capacity Nsukka International Market and the commissioning of strategic road infrastructure in the council area.
Speaking during the foundation-laying ceremony in Nsukka on Saturday, Engr. Asogwa described the governor’s intervention as a monumental boost to the economic growth and prosperity of Nsukka and the entire Enugu North Senatorial Zone.
According to him, the twin projects — the international market and the newly reconstructed School of Health–Stadium–GRA–Secretariat–Prisons Ring Road — represent a new dawn in the council’s drive for modernization, commerce, and improved quality of life for residents.
“We have been joyful over the world-class transport terminal you built for us. While we were still celebrating it, you have returned to give us an international market. These are projects that will stand the test of time, transform trade in Nsukka, and open up new economic frontiers for our people,” Asogwa said.
The chairman disclosed that his administration has commenced the registration of traders displaced by the Ogige Market redevelopment to ensure they benefit first from the allocation of new shops in the international market.
He further commended Governor Mbah’s inclusive governance approach, noting that the projects in Nsukka are part of a balanced statewide development agenda that leaves no community behind.
Other dignitaries at the event, including Member of the House of Representatives for Nsukka/Igbo Eze South Federal Constituency, Hon. Chidi Mark Obetta; Member representing Nsukka West in the State House of Assembly, Hon. Malachy Onyechi; Commissioner for Health, Prof. George Ugwu; and PDP Enugu North Zonal Woman Leader, Mrs. Ngozi Ezeja, lauded the governor’s vision for Enugu North.
The chairman noted that with the international market set for completion by the end of 2025, Nsukka would soon emerge as a major commercial hub, attracting traders and investors from across Nigeria and the West African sub-region.
Earlier in the day, Governor Mbah paid a courtesy call on the Chairman of the Enugu State Traditional Rulers Council, Igwe Samuel Asadu, at Edem Ani, where he was received with commendations by traditional rulers, including the monarch of Obimo, Igwe Tony Ezema.
The event was marked by celebrations from traders, community leaders, and residents who see the projects as a turning point in Nsukka’s economic and infrastructural transformation.
