FG Moves to Strengthen Police Training with New Academy Campus, Upgrade of 42 Colleges

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to reforming the Nigeria Police Force through improved education, training, and institutional development aimed at enhancing professionalism and national security.

Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, made this known on Monday in Abuja during a courtesy visit by the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, alongside senior police officers.

According to the minister, discussions centered on plans to establish a southern campus of the Nigeria Police Academy in Erije, Ogun State, as part of President Bola Tinubu’s broader agenda to reposition the police for more effective service delivery.

He disclosed that the proposed academy campus is expected to admit its first batch of students between September and November 2026, with the National Universities Commission directed to accelerate its resource verification process to ensure timely takeoff.

Alausa also revealed plans to convert more than 42 police colleges across the country into monotechnics, a move designed to boost technical and professional training within the Force. He noted that a presidential waiver has already been secured to support the transition.

As part of the reform, five to six of the institutions are expected to receive accreditation to offer practical, industry-relevant courses that will improve police capacity and operational efficiency.

To drive implementation, three separate committees have been inaugurated, focusing on resource verification, capacity development in police colleges, and infrastructure for the new southern academy campus.

The Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmed, commended the initiative and pledged the ministry’s full support toward its success.

Speaking earlier, the police chief emphasized that education remains a vital tool in addressing national challenges, stressing that the Force is committed to introducing new academic and professional programmes that will strengthen personnel development and improve security nationwide.
