In a bold move aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s internal security architecture, the National Economic Council (NEC) has appointed Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, as Chairman of a special national committee to overhaul the country’s security training institutions.
The decision, taken at NEC’s 152nd meeting held Thursday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, followed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s proposal for a comprehensive revamp of training facilities across the nation’s security agencies.
Governor Mbah will now lead the high-powered committee saddled with the responsibility of developing a far-reaching blueprint for the renovation, modernization, and re-equipping of police and paramilitary training institutions nationwide. The committee has one month to deliver its report.
The appointment, widely celebrated across political and security circles, is seen as a recognition of Governor Mbah’s record of transformative governance, disruptive innovation, and his remarkable modernization of Enugu State’s security architecture since assuming office.
Former Inspector-General of Police, Baba Usman, will serve as the committee’s secretary, while Governors Uba Sani (Kaduna), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Kefas Agbu (Taraba), Umoh Eno (Akwa Ibom), Dauda Lawal (Zamfara), and Abdullahi Sule (Nasarawa) will serve as members.
President Tinubu, while addressing the Council, emphasized the urgency of the reforms, noting that “we have to make the conditions of the training facilities more conducive for both the trainers and trainees.”
Governor Mbah’s leadership of the strategic reform committee places him at the centre of Nigeria’s renewed drive to professionalize its security services through enhanced training standards, modern infrastructure, and improved welfare conditions for personnel.
Observers note that his appointment further affirms his growing national reputation as a results-driven reformer capable of translating policy visions into measurable outcomes for sustainable development and security efficiency.
