The Lagos State Government has announced temporary road closures across parts of Lagos Island ahead of the vibrant Lagos Fanti Carnival set to take place on Monday.
In a statement released on Friday by the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, officials disclosed that the restrictions will begin from 7:00 a.m. to allow for a smooth and secure carnival procession.
Affected routes include King George V Road near Mobil Filling Station, Onikan Roundabout heading toward TBS, Flagstaff House inbound to TBS, Outer Marina near State House, Campbell Street by the Old Defence Building, and Catholic Mission Street close to St. Nicholas Hospital.
The ministry explained that the temporary closures are aimed at ensuring safety and proper organisation as large crowds are expected to gather for the annual celebration. Motorists and residents have been urged to plan ahead and make use of alternative routes during the period.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has also outlined diversion plans to ease movement and reduce congestion. Vehicles from Obalende heading toward Onikan Roundabout will be redirected to Zone 2, while those coming from Bonny Camp toward McEwen Bridge, as well as from Flagstaff House to TBS, will be diverted through Obalende Bridge. Similarly, motorists from Outer Marina heading to TBS will also be rerouted via Obalende Bridge.
According to the ministry, these measures are designed to minimise disruptions for commuters and businesses within the Lagos Island axis.
While apologising for any inconvenience, the government appealed for public understanding, stressing that the arrangements are necessary to ensure a safe and successful carnival.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Fanti Carnival, a long-standing cultural event, will feature music, dance, and colourful displays celebrating Lagos’ rich Afro-Brazilian heritage.
