The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the death of 11 people and the destruction of more than 50 homes following a communal crisis in Akyawa and Udege Kasa communities of Nasarawa Local Government Area.
In a statement issued in Lafia on Saturday, the Command’s spokesperson, Ramhan Nansel, disclosed that the violence erupted on Friday morning when suspected hoodlums launched a reprisal attack over the alleged killing of two of their kinsmen.
According to him, the attack left 11 persons dead and led to the burning of about 52 houses across the affected communities.
The Commissioner of Police, Shetima Mohammed, visited the scene for an on-the-spot assessment to evaluate the extent of damage and ensure a return to calm.
During the visit, the CP expressed deep condolences to the families of the victims and the affected communities, assuring them that the Command is fully committed to bringing those responsible to justice.
He has also ordered a full-scale manhunt for the perpetrators, directing tactical and investigative teams to swiftly identify, arrest, and prosecute those involved.
To forestall further unrest, additional security personnel have been deployed to the area. The police are also working closely with the Nigerian Military and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to strengthen security and restore lasting peace.
A stakeholders’ meeting was held during the visit, where residents were urged to remain calm, obey the law, and support security agencies with credible information to aid ongoing investigations.
The police further reassured the public that normalcy has been restored, with measures already in place to prevent a recurrence of the violence.
