A fire outbreak on Wednesday afternoon destroyed sections of Abbatuwa Cemetery in Fagge Local Government Area of Kano State, causing damage to several parts of the burial ground.
The incident occurred around 2:02 p.m. after the Kano State Fire Service received a distress call from a resident, Bashir Hassan. Firefighters were immediately deployed from the agency’s headquarters to contain the blaze.
On arrival, officials discovered that dry grasses within the cemetery had ignited and fuelled the fire, allowing it to spread rapidly across parts of the premises. The fire was eventually brought under control, preventing further damage to adjoining areas.
Confirming the incident on Thursday, the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Abdullahi, said although the fire was successfully extinguished, several sections of the cemetery were severely affected.
Preliminary findings by the agency indicate that the fire was likely caused by human activities.
Abdullahi cautioned members of the public, especially smokers, against engaging in activities that could trigger fires in cemeteries and other areas with dry vegetation.
He urged residents to avoid smoking or carrying naked flames in such environments and to promptly report any fire outbreak to the fire service, reaffirming the agency’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property across Kano State.
