The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has imposed a $100,000 fine on the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) and issued multiple player suspensions following disciplinary breaches during and after Algeria’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 quarter-final defeat to Nigeria.
The sanctions relate to chaotic scenes that occurred after Nigeria’s 2–0 victory over Algeria on January 10, 2026, in Marrakech, Morocco. Following the final whistle, several Algerian players and officials confronted match officials, an act CAF said brought the game into disrepute. The incident escalated into a scuffle that also involved Nigerian players.
According to CAF, Algeria was fined:
$25,000 for the conduct of players and officials after the match
$15,000 for disciplinary infractions including five yellow cards, the use of smoke bombs by supporters, and objects thrown from the stands
$60,000 for offensive and abusive gestures by supporters toward match officials and for security breaches involving attempts to force stadium barriers
CAF also handed suspensions to two Algerian players. Rafik Belghali was banned for four matches, while Luca Zidane received a two-match suspension for their roles in the post-match altercation.
In response, the Algerian Football Federation confirmed it has initiated an appeal process to contest the sanctions, stating it will closely monitor the case as it progresses through CAF’s regulatory framework.
The disciplinary measures highlight CAF’s continued efforts to enforce conduct standards and stadium security protocols during major continental tournaments.
