Bucharest, Romania, August 24, 2025 – Nigeria’s Abdul Jabar Adama has etched his name in history, becoming the first-ever Nigerian swimmer to win a medal at the World Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships.

 

The 17-year-old sensation won Silver in the men’s 50m Butterfly, clocking 23.64 seconds to finish just behind Great Britain’s Dean Fearn, who clinched Gold in 23.54 seconds.

 

Adama’s feat not only delivered Nigeria’s first global medal at the prestigious championships but also saw him smash two national records in a single day.

 

He first lowered his own Nigerian record of 23.81 seconds to 23.61 in the preliminaries, before setting a new benchmark of 23.48 seconds in the semifinals.

 

The teenager’s outstanding performance has now positioned him as one of Africa’s brightest swimming prospects and a potential Olympic medal contender for the 2028 Los Angeles Games.

 

Adama’s breakthrough signals a new dawn for Nigerian swimming on the global stage, with many describing his success as a source of national pride and inspiration for young athletes.
