Popular Nigerian comedian and actor Chibunna Stanley, popularly known as Funnybone, has sparked widespread reactions after sharing his thoughts on the connection between faith, childhood trauma and emotional healing.
In a post on his Instagram page, Funnybone said becoming born again does not automatically heal childhood trauma or behavioural issues, urging churches to place greater emphasis on mental and emotional well-being.
He noted that many Christians often see avoiding habits like substance abuse or sexual immorality as the only sign of spiritual transformation, while ignoring unresolved emotional wounds that continue to shape their behaviour.
According to the comedian, unresolved trauma can influence how people think, react and relate with others, even after giving their lives to Christ. He added that some of the most difficult personalities he has encountered identify as born-again Christians, stressing that spiritual rebirth should not be seen as a replacement for emotional healing.
Funnybone also encouraged believers to embrace therapy alongside their faith, saying religion, spirituality and professional mental health support can coexist.
His comments have since sparked mixed reactions online. While many applauded him for highlighting the importance of mental health within religious communities, others argued that the Holy Spirit plays a central role in helping believers overcome emotional and behavioural struggles.
