U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a stern ultimatum to Russian President Vladimir Putin, threatening to impose 100 percent tariffs on Russia if a peace deal with Ukraine is not reached within the next 50 days.
Trump made the declaration during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in the Oval Office on Monday, expressing deep frustration over Russia’s continued aggression in Ukraine.
“We are very, very unhappy with [Russia], and we’re going to be doing very severe tariffs if we don’t have a deal in 50 days—tariffs at about 100 percent,” Trump stated. “I’m disappointed in President Putin. I thought we would’ve had a deal two months ago.”
In a significant policy shift, Trump also announced a new agreement with NATO to supply Ukraine with advanced weaponry, including at least 17 U.S.-manufactured Patriot missile systems. Under the deal, the United States will provide the equipment, but European nations will foot the bill.
“We’ve made a deal today where we are going to be sending [Ukraine] weapons, and [Europe] is going to be paying for them,” Trump said. “We—the United States—will not be having any payment made. We’re not buying it, but we will manufacture it, and they’re going to be paying for it.”
Trump emphasized America’s manufacturing strength, declaring, “We make the best equipment, the best missiles—and the European nations know that. We are going to be sending the best to NATO.”
The move comes amid growing criticism of previous U.S. administration policies regarding military aid to Ukraine. Trump’s remarks also included sharp criticism of Putin, whom he accused of deception:
“He talks nice and then bombs everybody in the evening.”
Trump concluded by confirming that the new military support will include “various pieces of very sophisticated military equipment,” adding, “They are going to pay us 100 percent for that, and that’s the way we want it.”
The announcement marks a dramatic escalation in U.S. economic pressure on Moscow and a renewed push to strengthen NATO’s military posture amid the ongoing war in Eastern Europe. The clock now ticks on Trump’s 50-day deadline—placing global focus squarely on whether Putin will shift course or face unprecedented economic retaliation from Washington.
