The special Federal Executive Council (FEC) session earlier scheduled for Tuesday to honour the late former President Muhammadu Buhari has been postponed, the Presidency announced on Monday.
According to a statement by Presidential Spokesman Bayo Onanuga, the postponement was necessitated by preparations for the state funeral to be held in Buhari’s hometown, Daura, Katsina State, on Tuesday, July 15.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had called for the special FEC session to honour his predecessor’s legacy and immense contributions to national development. However, the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) will announce a new date for the session following the conclusion of the funeral proceedings.
The remains of the former Nigerian leader are expected to arrive in Katsina from London by noon on Tuesday and will be laid to rest the same day in Daura in accordance with Islamic rites.
President Buhari, who led Nigeria from 2015 to 2023, died on Sunday in a London clinic after a prolonged illness.
In a show of solidarity, President Tinubu had earlier directed Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila to lead a high-powered delegation to London to condole with the Buhari family and accompany the body back to Nigeria.
As preparations for the final rites intensify, the nation continues to mourn the passing of one of its most prominent leaders, whose influence spanned both military and democratic eras.
