The Federal Government of Nigeria has formally announced the burial arrangements for the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London on Sunday, July 13, 2025.
During a press briefing on Monday, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has constituted an Inter-Ministerial Committee to coordinate the state burial. The committee will work in close collaboration with the Katsina State Government and the family of the deceased former president.
The committee is chaired by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume. Other members include key cabinet officials such as the Ministers of Finance, Budget and Economic Planning, Defence, Information, Works, Interior, FCT, Housing, Health, Culture, and the National Security Adviser, among others.
Also serving on the committee are the Inspector-General of Police, Director-General of the Department of State Services, Chief of Defence Staff, and the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Political Matters. The Permanent Secretary of the General Services Office will serve as the Secretary to the committee.
As part of the burial schedule, 25 members of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) have been directed to travel to Katsina to participate in the funeral rites and remain for the third-day Islamic prayers in Daura on Wednesday, July 16, 2025.
“As we prepare to bid farewell to one of Nigeria’s foremost statesmen, the Federal Government urges all Nigerians to join in prayers and reflection for the repose of the soul of our former leader,” Idris stated.
The government’s announcement signals the beginning of a solemn national farewell to the late President Buhari, whose military and civilian leadership left a significant imprint on Nigeria’s political history.
