Donald Trump announced on Saturday that his relationship with billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk is effectively over, warning of unspecified “serious consequences” should Musk choose to fund Democratic candidates running against pro-Trump Republicans.
In a phone interview with NBC News, Trump confirmed there have been no discussions about probing Musk, but made it clear that he has no plans to reconcile. “I would assume so, yeah,” Trump said when asked if the relationship had ended. “I have no intention of speaking to him.”
Despite the public fallout, Trump said he hasn’t considered canceling federal contracts with Musk’s companies—SpaceX and Starlink.
The rift comes amid growing tensions after Musk publicly slammed Trump’s sweeping tax and spending bill, calling it a “disgusting abomination.” Musk’s opposition has added complexity to its passage, especially in a narrowly divided Congress where Republicans hold slim majorities.
While the bill narrowly passed the House last month, it still faces hurdles in the Senate. Nonpartisan analysts estimate it could add $2.4 trillion to the already $36.2 trillion national debt over a decade—a major concern for fiscal conservatives.
Musk also suggested the need for a new centrist political party, claiming it would better represent the “80% in the middle.”
Still, Trump remains confident. “People that were on the fence are now enthusiastically backing the bill. We expect it to pass before July 4,” he said.
Despite internal grumblings, Republican lawmakers have continued to support Trump’s initiatives in his second term, with no major policy or nomination defeats so far.
Musk, who spent nearly $300 million backing Trump-aligned candidates in 2024 and helped the GOP retain control of both chambers of Congress, was recently praised by Trump and even appointed head of the Department of Government Efficiency. However, Musk fell far short of expectations, reducing federal spending by just 0.5%—well below his ambitious goal of cutting $2 trillion.
Their feud escalated on social media this week, with Musk even endorsing a post calling for Trump’s impeachment and Vice President JD Vance to take over. Though Musk has since deleted some of those posts, including one where he simply replied “yes” to an impeachment call, sources close to him suggest his anger may be subsiding.
On Thursday’s taping of “This Past Weekend” podcast, JD Vance described Musk’s outburst as a “huge mistake,” adding, “I hope Elon comes back into the fold… He’s an incredible entrepreneur.”
Trump is scheduled to attend a UFC fight in New Jersey on Saturday—an event Musk will reportedly skip. The two had previously attended similar UFC events together earlier in Trump’s second term.
