President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is scheduled to address a special joint session of the Senate and House of Representatives on Thursday, June 12, at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, as part of activities marking Nigeria’s Democracy Day.
June 12 is celebrated annually in honour of the 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as the most credible in Nigeria’s post-independence history. The election, won by the late Chief Moshood Abiola, was annulled by the then-military government led by Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (retd).
In a statement released on Sunday, House of Representatives spokesman Akin Rotimi confirmed the event, citing an internal memo issued by the Clerk of the House, Yahaya Danzaria. The joint sitting will take place in the House of Representatives Chamber and is set to begin with preliminary activities at 11:00 AM. President Tinubu is expected to arrive by noon and deliver a presidential address.
This year’s Democracy Day theme is “26 Years of Democracy: Renewing Our Commitment to National Development.” Tinubu, who will serve as the Special Guest of Honour, will also confer National Honours on selected legislators during the session.
The programme will include goodwill messages from former presiding officers of the National Assembly and will reflect on the institution’s critical role in sustaining democracy, promoting accountability, and advancing national progress over the past 26 years of uninterrupted civil governance.
The House urged all Nigerians to embrace Democracy Day as a time for deep reflection, patriotic renewal, and a reaffirmed commitment to building a united, inclusive, and prosperous nation.
