President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday visited victims of the recent massacre in the Yelwata community of Guma Local Government Area, Benue State, as part of his official visit to the state.
According to UGAMA TV, the President arrived at the Tactical Air Command of the Nigerian Air Force Base in Makurdi at approximately 12:58 p.m., and proceeded directly to the hospital where survivors of the attack are receiving treatment.
After the hospital visit, President Tinubu moved to the New Banquet Hall of the Benue State Government House, where he was scheduled to meet with key stakeholders regarding the spate of violence that has claimed numerous lives.
The Benue State Government had earlier declared a public holiday in honour of the President’s visit.
The visit comes in the aftermath of a brutal attack on Yelwata last Friday, where over 200 residents were reportedly killed and many others injured.
Eyewitnesses recounted that the assailants launched a coordinated attack on the community at dawn, splitting into three groups to infiltrate from different directions. The gunmen reportedly fired in alternating turns, creating confusion and hampering local security responses.
President Tinubu’s visit is seen as a crucial step in demonstrating federal concern and addressing the worsening security challenges in the region.
