Tension is mounting in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, following the alleged killing of a female student, Miss Emmanuela Ahenjir, by a police officer in the early hours of Friday at the Wurukum Roundabout.
Miss Ahenjir, a student of the Federal University, Wukari, Taraba State, was said to have gone out with friends on Thursday night and was returning around 4:00 a.m. when they encountered a police checkpoint at Wurukum.
Sources revealed that the driver of the vehicle she was in diverted to the opposite lane and failed to stop when flagged down for a routine check. In response, one of the officers reportedly opened fire, striking Emmanuela in the waist. She reportedly died before receiving medical attention.
The incident has sparked outrage, with increasing calls for justice. There are threats of a citywide shutdown in Makurdi if the identities of the officers involved are not disclosed by Tuesday next week.

“Makurdi will witness a total shutdown through a peaceful protest. We will not relent. We will not be silenced. Justice must be served, and those responsible must be held accountable,” stated Ukan Kurugh, a well-known human rights activist, via his Facebook page.
Kurugh, who described himself as the “Voice of the Voiceless,” further called on the Benue State Commissioner of Police to take immediate action. “We have exhausted every peaceful and lawful avenue to seek justice. If we continue to be ignored, we will respond differently,” he warned.
He urged supporters to wear black and await further instructions. “Do not wait until it hits your home. Stand up now,” he said.
Efforts to get a response from the Police Public Relations Officer, CPS Sewuese Anene, were unsuccessful, as she did not reply to a text message seeking confirmation of the incident.
