Preliminary investigations revealed that a welding gas cylinder exploded while a welder was working on metal, likely due to exposure to excessive heat.

“On May 16, police operatives attached to the Onitsha Head Bridge Division assisted in the rescue efforts alongside well-meaning individuals. Six victims were rescued and rushed to the hospital, while one person unfortunately lost his life,” Ikenga stated.

The deceased has been deposited in a morgue, while the injured victims are currently receiving medical treatment.

The Police have since secured the area to prevent any potential criminal activity in the aftermath of the incident.

Expressing his concern, the State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, called for regular inspection and proper maintenance of gas-related equipment. He emphasized that gas cylinders must be stored securely and used strictly in accordance with manufacturers’ guidelines and safety protocols to prevent such tragedies in the future.
