“REBIRTH OF SERVICE: Gov. Peter Mbah’s Landmark Overhaul Reopens Awgu NYSC Camp as Chairman Okolo Welcomes Corps Members to a New Era of Excellence”

A new chapter has begun for youth development and national service in Enugu State as the Executive Chairman of Awgu Local Government Area, Hon. Uchenna Joseph Okolo, officially welcomed National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members back to the newly rehabilitated Awgu Orientation Camp following months of closure.

The reopening comes on the heels of a sweeping infrastructural transformation spearheaded by the Governor of Enugu State, Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, whose intervention has restored the camp from a state of decay to a modern, fully equipped orientation facility.

Previously shut down due to severe infrastructural deterioration, the Awgu NYSC Camp has undergone a comprehensive overhaul, emerging as a symbol of renewed commitment to youth empowerment and public infrastructure. The upgraded facility now boasts a 2,000-capacity multipurpose hall, 500-capacity hostels, newly constructed staff quarters, a solar-powered borehole system, and well-paved access roads fitted with solar streetlights.

Addressing corps members during the swearing-in ceremony of the 2026 Batch A Stream II, Hon. Okolo commended Governor Mbah’s “visionary leadership and bold infrastructural strides,” noting that the administration’s proactive approach is repositioning Enugu as a beacon of development and excellence.

He described the revitalization of the orientation camp as a strategic investment in both youth empowerment and grassroots economic growth, adding that it will significantly enhance the socio-economic profile of Awgu and its surrounding communities.

“Governor Mbah is God-sent to Ndi Enugu,” Okolo declared, emphasizing that the project reflects a deliberate and inclusive development agenda aimed at uplifting communities across the state.

Welcoming the corps members, the chairman highlighted the NYSC scheme as a vital platform for fostering national unity and reorientation among Nigerian youths. He assured them of their safety and well-being throughout their stay, stating emphatically, “Be assured that you are safe and secure.”

The swearing-in ceremony, held at the Awgu Orientation Camp, attracted a wide array of dignitaries, including government officials, traditional rulers, and NYSC authorities. Representing the governor, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Lloyd Ikechukwu Ekweremadu, charged corps members to embrace their service year with purpose and contribute meaningfully to their host communities.

He reaffirmed the state government’s unwavering commitment to the welfare and security of corps members, noting that the camp’s transformation goes beyond infrastructure to reflect a broader vision of dignity, comfort, and opportunity for Nigerian youths.

Ekweremadu also praised Hon. Okolo for his dedication to ensuring a seamless and conducive orientation exercise, highlighting the strong synergy between the state government, local authorities, and NYSC management as a key driver of success.

The camp’s transformation was initiated following concerns raised by the Enugu State NYSC Coordinator, Oluwakemi Awolola, over the deteriorating condition of the facility. In response, Governor Mbah approved a comprehensive redevelopment plan that has since delivered tangible improvements in infrastructure, accessibility, and security.

Additional ongoing projects—including new hostel blocks, a proposed 5,000-capacity multipurpose hall, and plans for a standard parade and sports field—are expected to further elevate the camp to world-class standards.

The ceremony formally inducted the new batch of corps members into the one-year national service programme, setting the stage for impactful service delivery, grassroots development, and strengthened national cohesion.

With the rebirth of the Awgu NYSC Orientation Camp, Enugu State has once again demonstrated its resolve to invest in the future—empowering its youth, revitalizing its infrastructure, and reinforcing its place as a leader in progressive governance.
