A sweeping political declaration unfolded in Enugu State on Saturday as the people of Enugu West Senatorial District staged a historic show of unity, endorsing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Peter Mbah for a second term ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The endorsement, described by observers as a “total political shutdown,” drew thousands to the Awgu Local Government Secretariat field, where stakeholders across political, traditional, and institutional lines converged in a rare demonstration of consensus and strategic alignment.
A Vote of Confidence Backed by Action
In a bold affirmation of their stance, the zone presented a cheque of ₦100 million to Governor Mbah to support the procurement of his nomination form. The symbolic gesture underscored not just endorsement, but a firm commitment to mobilise electoral backing.
Senator Osita Ngwu, who presided over the endorsement process, emphasised that the decision was rooted in visible performance rather than political sentiment. He highlighted transformative projects such as the Command and Control Centre, Smart Schools across wards, upgraded healthcare facilities, and extensive road infrastructure as evidence of impactful governance.
“At the national level, we are witnessing transformational leadership, and Enugu State is directly benefiting from these policies,” Ngwu stated, linking state-level progress to federal collaboration.
‘One-Term Promise Is Deception’ — Nnamani
Adding a cautionary tone to the event, former Senate President Ken Nnamani dismissed campaign promises of single-term tenures by some aspirants, warning that such pledges lack sincerity.
“Some people tell lies with confidence. They will not keep such promises,” Nnamani cautioned, urging voters to prioritise proven leadership and continuity. He further noted that Governor Mbah’s performance and credibility positioned him as a dependable choice, even among his peers nationwide.
Military, Political Leaders Align
Voices from across leadership strata echoed the endorsement. Former Chief of Naval Staff, Allison Madueke, and former Gombe State Military Administrator, Joseph Orji, both affirmed that the people’s testimonies reflected tangible development and deserved continuity.
Mbah: ‘A Mandate for Equity and Progress’
An elated Governor Mbah described the rally as unprecedented, commending the people for their commitment to justice, equity, and strategic political thinking.
“This is a movement driven by truth and measurable results,” he said, pledging to sustain development strides and deepen the gains already recorded.
He also defended the economic policies of President Tinubu, citing improvements in macroeconomic stability, foreign reserves growth, and increased fiscal capacity for states and local governments to execute large-scale projects.
Broad-Based Political Backing
The endorsement motions were formally moved and seconded by key political figures, including Hon. Sunday Umeha, Hon. Toby Okechukwu, Speaker Uchenna Ugwu, and Hon. Magnus Ede.
Support also came from traditional rulers, elder statesmen, party leaders, and local government chairmen, notably Uchenna Okolo, who spoke on behalf of council leaders across the Enugu West zone.
A Defining Moment Ahead of 2027
The Enugu West endorsement signals a significant consolidation of political support in the South East, positioning both Tinubu and Mbah strongly as the 2027 political landscape begins to take shape.
With financial backing, grassroots mobilisation, and elite consensus now visibly aligned, the rally marks not just an endorsement—but the formal ignition of a high-stakes re-election campaign built on performance, continuity, and strategic alliances.
