The spokesperson for the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters Annex, Lagos, CSP Nkeiruka Nwode, has appealed to Nigerians to refrain from spreading unverified claims over the death of Miss Mary Habila.
In a statement issued on Friday, Nwode described Habila’s death as a tragic loss and extended condolences to her family, friends and all those affected.
She urged the public to allow law enforcement authorities to conduct a thorough, impartial and transparent investigation, including an autopsy, stressing that justice for the deceased must be pursued alongside fairness to everyone connected with the case.
Nwode warned against using grief as a basis for speculation or the spread of misinformation, insisting that no individual should be judged or convicted on social media before the facts are established.
She emphasised that public discussions should be guided by verified facts rather than rumours and called on Nigerians to allow due process to take its full course.
The police spokesperson also cautioned against defamatory statements and actions capable of inflaming public sentiment, noting that reputations built over many years should not be damaged by assumptions or unverified narratives.
She concluded by praying for the peaceful repose of Mary Habila’s soul and for truth, justice and peace to prevail as investigations continue.
