Former Peter Obi has urged Nigerians to defend the country’s democracy, warning against moves toward a one-party system.
In a post shared on his official X handle on Wednesday, Obi, now a member of the African Democratic Congress, stressed that members of the party and other pro-democracy Nigerians are united in opposing any actions that could weaken the nation’s multi-party system.
He called on citizens who value unity, peace, and national security to actively safeguard Nigeria’s democratic framework, emphasizing that undermining political plurality would hinder the country’s democratic growth and stability.
Part of his statement read: “We, members and leaders of the ADC, alongside other well-meaning Nigerians and lovers of democracy, insist that our democracy must not be undermined. We reject any move towards a one-party system and call on all Nigerians who believe in unity, peace, and security to join us in defending our democracy.”
