Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has directed the Ministry of Water Resources to immediately regulate sand mining activities near water treatment plants across Kano State.
The directive was issued on Tuesday during an inspection of the Tamburawa Water Treatment Plant as part of the governor’s ongoing tour of the state’s water facilities.
According to a statement from his Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, the move aims to protect critical water infrastructure and ensure a steady supply of clean water to residents.
Governor Yusuf expressed concern over increasing sand mining activities around water treatment plants, warning that such practices could disrupt water production and distribution. “Unregulated sand mining poses a serious threat to the smooth operation of our water treatment plants. We must act quickly to protect these facilities for the benefit of our people,” he said.
He instructed the ministry to strengthen monitoring and enforcement to prevent damage to water sources or interference with treatment processes.
The governor also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving access to potable water in Kano State, urging stakeholders to cooperate with government efforts to safeguard public utilities. “We remain committed to providing clean and safe water to our citizens, and this can only be achieved if we protect the systems that make it possible,” he added.
