Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has said he deliberately chose not to commission or name any projects after himself during his time as Governor of Anambra State, describing such acts as irrelevant in the face of Nigeria’s pressing challenges.
Obi made the remarks in a now-viral video during a conversation with veteran entertainer Charly Boy. The exchange came in reaction to the recent renaming of Charly Boy Bus Stop in Lagos to Olamide Baddo Bus Stop by the Bariga Local Council Development Area (LCDA), a move that sparked nationwide criticism and calls for reversal.
Addressing the controversy, Obi said, “To me, it is totally irrelevant when you have millions of people who don’t know where their next meal will come from. Whether they change it to A or B doesn’t solve the problem.”
Reflecting on his time in office, Obi said he resisted every attempt to immortalize him through public projects. “As governor, I refused to allow streets or buildings be named after me. I even built a facility in a hospital, and when the proprietor offered to name it after me or my mother, I declined,” he revealed.
He explained that his decision not to commission or name public projects after himself led to perceptions that he did little during his administration. “They say I didn’t do much publicity, but for me, I didn’t see the point of attaching my name to anything funded with public money.”
Obi added that if he ever becomes president, the same principle would apply. “My name will not be on any facility. All I want is for the facility to function and serve the people,” he stated.
