PEOPLE’S PERCEPTION OF VALENTINE’S DAY

Valentine’s day is a time of the year when people appreciate and show love to special people in their lives. It is also believe to be one of the most special day when lovers express their affection through greetings and gifts to one another.

This celebration which occurs every 14th February is to commemorate a priest named, Saint Valentine, who helped Christian couples in getting married but was thrown to jail and later beheaded according to the order of Emperor Claudius.

It is also believed that before his death while imprisoned, he took care of the jailer’s blind daughter and gift her a card which reads: “from your Valentine” But this has different meaning to different people.

UGAMATV spoke with some youths in Enugu Metropolis about what they think the celebration stands for and most of them had different things to say about the celebration.

Some say Valentine’s day is the most special day to celebrate with their loved ones by going clubbing, swimming and any other recreational activity to ‘paint the city red’. While others added that Valentine’s day means nothing to them as they are not in a relationship.

A couple who also spoke to UGAMATV, Emeka and Onyinye Orji adviced people saying that “married people should not be left out of celebrating Valentine’s day because it affords them the opportunity to rekindle their love for each other by going out to fun-filled places where they can share their happy moment together.

We also advise unmarried youths to abstain from premarital sex to avoid ruining their future but seek God’s face for the right life partner”, they said.

In a Valentine’s program tagged ‘The dynamics of love’ hosted by Redeemed Christian Church of God, Enugu for its members, pastor Nwachukwu admonished the youths saying that “Valentine’s day is not a day for fornication, adultery or fufillment of our lustful desires as the world may see it.

Pointing out scriptures in the bible which supported what she said, she added that “love is kind, patient, not boastful, not proud. Youths should emulate and express God’s kind of love, for God is love”.
