Oyo Gov’t Targets Road Safety with Increased Traffic Violation Fines

Motorists and cyclists in Oyo State will now face stiffer penalties for traffic offences, with fines ranging from ₦20,000 to ₦200,000, according to the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYTMA).

The new fines, which apply to both first-time and repeat offenders, were announced by OYTMA Chairman, Rtr. Major Adekoya Adesagba, during a meeting with zonal commanders at the agency’s headquarters in Ibadan.

Adesagba clarified that the revised fines are not intended to boost revenue, but rather to instill discipline among road users, enhance safety, and ensure free flow of traffic across the state.

“The essence of the increment is not to generate internal revenue but to safeguard the lives and property of people across the state,” he said.

He emphasized the agency’s commitment to enforcing the new measures, stating that the safety of road users remains a top priority.

Breakdown of New Penalties:

Driving an unlicensed motorcycle or tricycle: ₦25,000

Failure to paint commercial motorcycle/tricycle in approved colours:

First offence: ₦20,000

Repeat offence: ₦30,000

Driving in a prohibited direction:

First offence: ₦100,000

Repeat offence: ₦200,000

Failure to park at designated motor parks:

First offence: ₦20,000

Subsequent offence: ₦30,000

Adesagba also issued a warning to OYTMA officers, stating that any personnel caught engaging in misconduct or collecting bribes would face disciplinary action.
