Tinubu Warns Police Against Intimidation, Urges Respect for Citizens’ Rights

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued a strong warning to police officers, urging them to shun all forms of intimidation, abuse, and misconduct in the discharge of their duties. He emphasized that the Nigerian police must serve the people with integrity, professionalism, and respect for the rule of law.

The President’s remarks were delivered by Senate President Godswill Akpabio at the 2nd Annual Inspector General of Police Award and Commendation Ceremony, held on Wednesday night in Abuja.

“Be reminded that the power you wield is not for intimidation but for protection. It is not for abuse but for service,” Tinubu stated.

“Uphold the rule of law, protect the rights of every citizen, and reject all forms of misconduct and corruption. Only then can we build a police force that is truly respected and trusted by the people it serves.”

President Tinubu reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to reforming the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), pledging continued investment in modern tools, advanced technology, capacity-building initiatives, and improved welfare packages to boost efficiency and morale.

“This administration remains steadfast in its commitment to the transformation of the Nigeria Police Force. We understand that modern policing demands modern tools, continuous training, intelligence-led strategies, and community partnership,” he said.

Addressing the police officers directly, Tinubu encouraged them to embrace the public trust placed in them, regardless of rank or posting.

To the award recipients being honoured at the event, the President extended warm congratulations.

“You have made the nation proud. Let this recognition spur you to even greater heights. Let your example inspire others within the Force to emulate your discipline, hard work, professionalism, and integrity,” he added.
