Tension has gripped Lafiagi community in Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State following the abduction of a prominent agro-chemical dealer, popularly known as Alhaji Chemical, by gunmen suspected to be Fulani bandits.
The businessman was reportedly kidnapped from his residence in the Taiwo area of Lafiagi around 1:00 a.m. on Sunday, after a violent invasion by the attackers, who arrived on motorcycles and overpowered local vigilantes with heavy gunfire.
Community sources told UGAMA TV that the kidnapping appeared targeted and well-coordinated, raising fears of worsening insecurity in the area. The victim’s status and the precision of the operation have further deepened concerns among residents.
The latest incident has triggered fresh protests, as angry residents took to the streets on Monday, blocking major roads and demanding swift government intervention.
“The situation is getting out of hand,” a protester told UGAMA TV. “We can’t sleep with our eyes closed anymore. People are being taken almost weekly now.”
Protesters also cited the recent abduction of a young Point-of-Sale (POS) operator as further proof of the growing threat to safety in Lafiagi and surrounding communities.
The residents called on security agencies and the Kwara State Government to act decisively, intensify patrols, and ensure the safe rescue of all abducted persons.
“We are tired of empty promises. We want real action. Our lives and businesses are no longer safe,” another resident lamented.
As of the time of filing this report, the Kwara State Police Command had not issued an official statement on the incident.
