The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has applauded President Bola Tinubu for the orderly conduct of Saturday’s Area Council elections, stating that the outcome has made it clear which parties represent the ruling government and the genuine opposition.
In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, Wike made the remarks during a special broadcast aired on national television and radio stations on Sunday evening. He described the elections as proof of FCT residents’ dedication to democracy and effective governance.
Wike congratulated both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on their victories, while criticising detractors he labelled as “emergency democrats.” According to him, the election exposed what he termed the insincerity of individuals who engage in superficial campaign tactics to win public sympathy.
He said the results demonstrated that FCT residents could not be swayed by political theatrics, adding that the electorate had shown discernment in their choices.
The minister credited the peaceful exercise to Tinubu’s leadership and the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which he said has restored optimism and confidence among residents of the territory. He noted that the developmental strides in the FCT reflect the President’s vision and commitment to improving the lives of Nigerians.
Wike also commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for conducting what he described as a free, fair and credible poll. He praised security agencies for maintaining law and order and lauded voters, particularly those in satellite communities, for their impressive turnout.
He urged those elected to serve with humility and a sense of responsibility, assuring residents that his administration would continue delivering democratic dividends.
Reaffirming his support for electoral reforms, Wike highlighted President Tinubu’s backing of amendments to the Electoral Act aimed at strengthening the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process.
