Major US Base in Middle East Targeted by Tehran Amid Regional Escalation

An Iranian ballistic missile struck Al Udeid Air Base, the largest United States military installation in the Middle East and the operational headquarters of U.S. Central Command, late on Tuesday, Qatar’s Ministry of Defence has confirmed.

Qatari authorities said the incident resulted in no casualties, describing it as a serious but contained escalation in Iran’s retaliatory actions linked to the ongoing U.S.-Israeli military campaign against Tehran.

In a statement, the Defence Ministry disclosed that two ballistic missiles were fired from Iranian territory toward Qatar. One was intercepted by air defence systems, while the second landed within the vicinity of the base, located southwest of Doha, without causing loss of life or significant damage.

The ministry stressed that Qatar’s armed forces remain on high alert and retain full capacity to defend the country’s sovereignty and airspace.

Al Udeid Air Base hosts roughly 10,000 U.S. personnel and plays a central role in regional air operations, logistics coordination and command oversight.

It has increasingly featured in Iran’s response to recent U.S.-Israeli strikes targeting Iranian nuclear infrastructure, missile facilities and senior figures.

The latest strike comes amid a wave of Iranian missile and drone attacks directed at Gulf states hosting American forces, including Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Qatari officials said their air defences have intercepted dozens of threats in recent days, including more than 60 ballistic missiles and multiple drone incursions since early March.

Authorities also confirmed that two Iranian Su-24 aircraft approaching Qatari airspace were shot down on March 2.

While previous incidents involving Al Udeid reportedly caused only minor damage to facilities such as radar or communications systems, no U.S. fatalities have been recorded at the base throughout the exchanges.

Iranian state-affiliated media have claimed the strikes are intended to weaken U.S. military capabilities supporting operations against Iran.

Qatar, however, described the missile launch as a violation of its territorial integrity.

Residents in Doha reported hearing explosions in the hours preceding the official announcement, prompting heightened security alerts across the capital.

The U.S. Department of Defense has yet to issue a detailed response, though American officials have repeatedly stated that integrated air defence systems, including Patriot missile batteries, have intercepted most incoming threats. Some reports suggested that a Patriot system at Al Udeid attempted to neutralise the missile but failed to prevent impact despite multiple intercept attempts.

The development follows the first confirmed U.S. fatalities in the conflict, after six Army Reserve soldiers were killed in an Iranian strike on a military facility in Kuwait on March 1.

Qatar, which maintains diplomatic relations with both Washington and Tehran, has condemned the attacks while reinforcing its defensive posture across strategic locations.
