The Labour Party has announced April 28 as the date for its presidential primary, alongside a schedule for its ward, local government, and state congresses.
This was disclosed in a letter addressed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), signed by the party’s Interim National Chairman, Nenadi Usman, and made available to journalists on Friday in Abuja.
According to Usman, the correspondence was to formally notify INEC of the party’s approved timetable for its 2026 elective ward, Local Government Area (LGA), and state congresses, as well as its national convention.
She explained that the notification was in line with Section 82(1) of the Electoral Act 2022 (as amended), INEC regulations and guidelines for political parties, and relevant provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which require political parties to inform the commission of such activities.
Usman recalled that the party had earlier postponed its scheduled activities to allow for wider participation of members, particularly to complete its ongoing digital membership registration exercise.
She said the party has now finalised a new timetable for the conduct of its congresses and national convention.
According to the schedule, ward congresses will take place on April 23, followed by local government congresses on April 24, and state congresses on April 25.
The national convention, which will feature the presidential primary, is slated for April 28 at the International Conference Centre in Umuahia, Abia State.
Usman urged INEC to notify its state offices to ensure proper monitoring of the congresses and convention in line with its constitutional responsibilities.
She also reaffirmed the party’s commitment to strengthening democratic processes in Nigeria.
