The Chairman of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) in Kano State, Alhaji Dalhatu Salisu Mai Jumuri, has raised serious concern over the growing trend of students stopping strangers on the roadside to request free rides to school.
In an interview with a local media outlet, Alhaji Mai Jumuri described the practice as dangerous and unsafe for schoolchildren.
“It is very sad to see a student in uniform standing by the roadside stopping vehicles and begging strangers for a lift. This is risky and must stop,” he said.
He revealed that the PTA is collaborating with the Kano State Government to address the situation, including plans to provide transportation for male students, similar to what is already available for female students.
“Insha Allah, very soon, the government will provide buses to carry boys to school, just like they do for the girls,” he stated.
To tackle the issue directly, a special committee has been established to monitor students engaging in this practice. The committee will document the names, schools, and classes of such students so appropriate action can be taken.
Alhaji Mai Jumuri urged parents and guardians to take full responsibility for their children’s safety and warned of the long-term risks if the issue is not addressed.
“If we leave this problem, it could become very serious in the future,” he cautioned.
He also appealed to the general public to support initiatives aimed at ensuring students travel to school safely.
