Two persons have been confirmed dead following a clash between farmers and herders in Unguwar Dambo village, Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
Residents said the incident occurred on Thursday after a dispute over grazing rights.
An eyewitness, Alhaji Faruku, said the conflict began when some herders reportedly warned farmers to harvest their crops, claiming they would be passing through the farmlands with their cattle.
“The farmers ignored the warning and went to their farms as usual. The herders later attacked them, killing one farmer identified as Malam Sule,” he said.
The killing reportedly triggered a reprisal attack by the farmers, leading to the death of one herder, whose identity was yet to be confirmed as of press time.
Faruku, who said he lost his wife’s elder brother in the incident, called on authorities to intervene and end the recurring clashes between farmers and herders in the area.
“The problem is not new. Traditional rulers are aware of it. We expect justice for the victim and lasting peace in our community,” he added.
Efforts to get a reaction from the Kebbi State Police Command were unsuccessful, as messages sent to the command for confirmation had yet to be responded to at the time of filing this report.
