Fulani Community in Plateau State Demands End to “Unprovoked” Attacks on Herdsmen

The Fulani community in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State has demanded an end to what they described as unprovoked attacks on herdsmen by natives who also kill their cows.

The warning was contained in a statement signed on behalf of the herders in the council by the group’s Secretary, Abdullahi Yusuf, who called for a cessation of unprovoked and coordinated attacks on Fulani herders to avoid reprisals which often end in massive bloodshed.

In the statement titled “Another Attack on Fulani Herders in Riyom,” Yusuf narrated how some Berom youths attacked a Fulani herdsman, inflicting serious, life-threatening injuries on him while also killing a cow and injuring others in the process.

“The Fulani community in Riyom Local Government Area wishes to draw the attention of the public to yet another unprovoked attack on our people,” Yusuf said.

“At about 4pm on Thursday, 2nd October, 2025, suspected Berom youths attacked a Fulani herder, Aliyu Sale Shehu, around Rim community, Rim Ward, Riyom LGA, Plateau State, leaving him with gunshot injuries.

“In the same incident, one cow was killed and eight others sustained gunshot wounds,” he added.

Yusuf said the unprovoked attack was one of countless attacks on Fulani herders in Riyom while their means of livelihood are being destroyed.

Continuing, the statement said:

“They will attack our people mercilessly and if some of the affected herders decide to fight back, they will be tagged bandits and aggressors.

“Since the Thursday attack on Sale, there has been no statement, no action, and no justice from the government or community leaders. The silence only emboldens the attackers and increases the suffering of innocent Fulani herders.

“We demand urgent intervention from security agencies and call on the Plateau State Government to speak up and act before these unprovoked hostilities push the area into further crisis.”

“The Fulani are equal citizens of Riyom and Plateau State, and our lives and properties must be protected. Enough is Enough,” he reiterated.
