The family of the late Mrs. Monica Okwunerigo Okah, mother-in-law to former Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, has announced a comprehensive lineup of funeral rites ahead of her burial scheduled for Thursday, May 28, 2026.
In an obituary released on Wednesday by Engr. Isaac Okah on behalf of the late Chief John Nnolum Okah family, the ceremonies were outlined as a fitting farewell to a revered matriarch whose life left a lasting imprint on her community and beyond.
According to the statement, the final journey for Mrs. Okah will commence on Monday, May 25, with a Service of Songs at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Trans Ekulu, Enugu, by 5 p.m. This will be followed by a requiem mass and wake keep at her country home in Enugu-Agu Achi, Oji River Local Government Area.
The funeral mass is slated for Thursday, May 28, at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, Enugu-Agu Achi, after which condolence visits and a celebration of her life will take place. The ceremonies will culminate in an outing and thanksgiving service on Sunday, May 31, at the same church.
Mrs. Okah, who passed on March 20, 2026, was widely described as a devout Christian, community leader, mentor, and bridge builder. A woman of remarkable strength and compassion, she raised nine children, including Lady Beatrice Nwanneka Ekweremadu, wife of Senator Ekweremadu.
As preparations for her burial gather momentum, tributes have continued to pour in from across Nigeria’s political and social landscape, reflecting the profound impact of her life.
Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State described the late nonagenarian as a woman whose life embodied selfless service to God and humanity.
“She not only lived to a ripe age but left indelible marks as a community leader, peace builder, and generous giver. Her legacy will continue to inspire generations,” Mbah stated.
Similarly, Abia State Governor Alex Otti extolled her virtues, noting her deep spirituality and unwavering commitment to uplifting those around her.
Former Senate President Adolphus Wabara also paid tribute, describing her life as exemplary and worthy of emulation, marked by kindness, strength, and a nurturing presence.
In the same vein, former Senate President and ex-Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim, reflected on her enduring legacy, emphasizing her resilience, devotion to family, and impactful life of service.
“Mama’s long life stands as a testament to God’s grace and a legacy of love, resilience, and commitment to community,” he remarked.
As family, friends, and dignitaries prepare to bid farewell, Mrs. Monica Okwunerigo Okah is remembered not just for her longevity, but for a life richly lived in service, faith, and humanity—an enduring legacy that will continue to resonate for generations to come.
