The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has revealed that no serving governor has joined its ranks due to alleged intimidation by the Federal Government.
Speaking at the third plenary session of the Northern Political Consultative Group (NPCG) held in Abuja on Saturday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Malam Bolaji Abdullahi, said although some governors have shown interest in the ADC, they are reluctant to cross over due to fear of political backlash.
“No serving governor would be willing to cross over because of the intimidation that they are facing,” Abdullahi said.
“Some of them who cannot jump to their party are saying we are endorsing their presidential candidate. No problem. But what you are seeing is a conspiracy against the Nigerian people.”
He emphasized that the ADC remains open to all Nigerians, and positioned itself as a movement supported by citizens who are dissatisfied with the current trajectory of the country.
On the issue of presidential candidacy, Abdullahi clarified that the ADC has not yet endorsed or entered discussions with any aspirant.
“We don’t have any favourite aspirants or candidates… Our focus now is to build a political party strong enough to deliver on the mission that we have set for ourselves.”
Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir David Lawal, who is also a key member of the coalition, expressed confidence that the party would unite behind whoever wins the ADC presidential ticket.
Meanwhile, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Mr Peter Obi, and Rotimi Amaechi have all shown interest in vying for the party’s 2027 presidential ticket, according to National Post.
As it stands, the ADC appears ready to keep its ticket open, in contrast to the PDP, which has zoned its ticket to the South, and the APC, which has already handed its automatic ticket to President Bola Tinubu.
