Enugu Police Foil Armed Robbery, Kill One Suspect, Recover Guns and Stolen Items

Operatives of the Enugu State Police Command have successfully foiled an armed robbery, neutralising one suspect and recovering an assortment of firearms, ammunition, cash, and stolen items.

The incident happened at about 4:10 a.m. on August 6, 2025, at Premier Layout, Enugu. According to a statement issued on Friday by SP Daniel Ndukwe, Police Public Relations Officer for the state, the Independence Layout Police Division received a distress call about the ongoing attack and swiftly mobilised officers alongside members of the Neighbourhood Watch Group.

“On sighting them, the criminal gang opened fire, but the team responded with superior firepower, neutralising one of the hoodlums, whose identity remains unknown, while others fled,” Ndukwe said.

A search at the scene led to the recovery of a cut-to-size locally made single-barrel gun with one live cartridge, a locally fabricated Beretta pistol with one live round of ammunition, a Nokia torch-button phone belonging to the suspect, two iPhones belonging to victims, a small red bag, a red-and-black torchlight, and N9,000 in N1,000 notes.

Further investigations on August 8, 2025, also led to the recovery of a pump-action gun loaded with four live cartridges, suspected to have been abandoned nearby by the fleeing robbers.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, praised the operatives’ bravery and professionalism, reaffirming the Command’s commitment to combating violent crimes. He urged residents to remain vigilant and to promptly share credible information with the police to help prevent future incidents.

Members of the public are encouraged to report security concerns to the nearest police station, the Command’s Control Room via 08032003702 or 08086671202, or the Enugu State Command-and-Control Centre by dialling 112.
