Gunmen suspected to be bandits launched a deadly attack on Babanla community in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State on Friday, killing at least three people, including a police officer and two members of the local vigilante group.
According to eyewitnesses, the assault occurred during a routine meeting of the community’s vigilantes. The armed men reportedly stormed the area, targeting the local police station, attempting to loot grocery stores and a hotel, and firing indiscriminately. The chaos forced many residents to flee into nearby bushes for safety.
The Nigerian Army responded swiftly, engaging the attackers and repelling them. A security cordon was immediately mounted around the community to prevent further violence.
In a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Rafiu Ajakaye, the Kwara State Government commended the army, police, and vigilante members for their bravery and prompt intervention.
Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, who has been in constant contact with security commanders and local vigilante leaders since the incident, ordered a sustained security lockdown of the area to neutralise the threat and protect residents from future attacks.
