Judicial Independence Begins with Judges’ Welfare, Tinubu Declares as FG Commissions Housing Estate

President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening judicial independence, stressing that the welfare, security and dignity of judicial officers are essential to safeguarding the integrity of Nigeria’s justice system.

Speaking on Wednesday during the inauguration of 10 newly constructed housing units for judges of the Federal High Court in Katampe District, Abuja, the President said true judicial independence can only thrive when judges operate in an environment free from vulnerability and undue influence.

Represented by Vice-President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu described the project as more than a housing initiative, noting that it represents a deliberate effort to reinforce one of the most critical pillars of Nigeria’s democracy—the judiciary.

“True judicial independence is built on the dignity of our judicial officers. By providing these modern residential quarters, we are ensuring that Federal High Court judges carry out their responsibilities in security, comfort and dignity. This project is a statement that Nigeria values those entrusted with interpreting its laws,” he said.

The President emphasized that providing secure accommodation and conducive working conditions for judges is not a privilege but a national necessity, adding that judges cannot be expected to dispense justice fairly if their basic welfare and peace of mind are neglected.

Tinubu recalled that his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda was founded on a commitment to rebuild public trust in institutions, strengthen security and uphold the rule of law.

“For too long, judicial independence has been discussed in abstract terms. Independent judgment requires an independent and secure environment. Today’s commissioning is a concrete step toward fulfilling our promise to strengthen the nation’s institutions,” he stated.

The President also challenged members of the judiciary to remain committed to the swift, transparent and impartial dispensation of justice, describing equity and justice as central pillars of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

“As government continues to provide the infrastructure necessary for your welfare, we expect an unwavering commitment to fairness, integrity and efficiency in the administration of justice,” he added.

Tinubu used the occasion to commend the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for his performance in delivering critical infrastructure projects across Abuja.

According to the President, Wike has demonstrated exceptional commitment to public service through the timely execution of projects, including the judges’ housing estate.

“When I assigned Minister Wike the responsibility of transforming Abuja into a world-class capital city, I was confident in his ability to deliver. He has justified that confidence through results,” Tinubu said.

Earlier, the FCT Minister described the completion of the project within schedule as evidence of the administration’s dedication to judicial independence and the rule of law.

Wike urged beneficiaries to ensure proper maintenance of the facilities and disclosed that the entire area within Katampe District has been designated for residential accommodation for judges and other senior judicial officers in the Federal Capital Territory.

In his remarks, the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho, welcomed the inauguration of the housing estate, describing it as a strong demonstration of the nation’s commitment to protecting the independence and effectiveness of the judiciary.
