The Enugu State Police Command has firmly refuted widespread claims circulating on social media alleging that herdsmen carried out a deadly attack at Awgu Junction along the Enugu/Port Harcourt Expressway.
In an official press statement released on June 1, 2026, the Command described the viral video accompanying the claims as false, misleading, and deliberately crafted to incite fear, panic, and tension among residents of the state.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, preliminary investigations reveal that the incident did not occur as portrayed in the video, stressing that there is no credible report or evidence to support the allegations of any such killings.
“The narrative being circulated is entirely unfounded and should be disregarded by the public,” the statement read. “It is a calculated attempt to destabilize public peace and undermine the existing security architecture in the state.”
The Command strongly condemned the spread of unverified and inflammatory content, warning individuals and groups responsible for creating or disseminating such misinformation to desist immediately or face legal consequences.
Reaffirming its commitment to the protection of lives and property, the Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, assured residents that the Command remains vigilant and proactive in maintaining law and order across Enugu State.
Residents were further advised to rely only on credible and official sources of information and to promptly report any suspicious activities or security concerns to the appropriate authorities.
The Police emphasized that misinformation, if left unchecked, poses a serious threat to public safety and social harmony, urging citizens to act responsibly in the consumption and sharing of information.
As the state continues to enjoy relative peace, the Command called for sustained cooperation between the public and security agencies to preserve stability and prevent the spread of fear-driven narratives.
